LIFE

Written and Directed by Brent Rowland

We're casting several characters for the short film Life (working title). The final film will be 20-25 minutes in length with a highly stylized story and cinematography. Local filmmaker Michael Shumway will be the cinematographer on the project. Original music will be composed for the short. We're going into this with high expectations of everyone involved, and we'll be working our tails off to get accepted into high-profile film festivals across the country. This short is the basis for a feature script I'll be working on during my MFA in film at the University of Utah.

The Players

The following four make up the core of the film, with appearances by some other characters:

Henry: Male 12-14 years old. A precocious kid who's greatest desire is to become a photographer for Life magazine. He reads Walt Whitman, rides a bicycle, carries a camera, wears a fedora and smokes (infrequently). He tries his best to model his life after the great photojournalists of the 1960s. Witty and articulate. His father has been absent his whole life and he questions his relationship with his mother.

Brett Ashley: Female 12-14 years old. She's Henry's best friend. Also rides a bicycle. She acts out Shakespeare and camps in the backyard. In the story she's a symbol of youth, summertime and the freedom that comes with both.

Sylvie: Female 40-45 years old. Henry's mother. She questions her accomplishments or lack thereof as a mother. She believes in the power of coincidence and fate. She's distracted from motherhood by several problems that weigh on her mind. Smart and straightforward.

Martin: Male 20-22 years old. Henry's older brother. At the opening of the story he's just returned from two years of college, but he reveals he has in fact been wandering the Southwest without any intention of going to school. During that time he never communicated with his family. A lone wolf. He reads Jack London and always wants to be somewhere else. His experiences on the road haunt him and he questions where to go now that he's home.

Come prepared with a monologue if you wish and be ready for a cold read. Email me if you'd like to get some sides. I'll try to get some posted here this week. The art direction and cinematography on this short will be painstaking and precise. Two stylized montages will require a lot of work but will be very fun and beautiful. All footage will be provided for reels and credits on IMDb will be given. Plus you'll work with an exceptional crew.

Please let Craze know if cast thanks!
