CALL FOR WWII SUBMARINE FILM

Students and faculty of the Film School at NNU are in the process of building a full-size mockup of the control room of a WWII submarine for an upcoming short film.

The story revolves around real events that led to a serious moral dilemma on submarines on and after December 7th, 1941. The set is constructed so that it can tilt to dive and surface, raise a periscope, etc.

Former submariners are acting as technical advisors to make both the set and the script as realistic and accurate as possible.

Filming will be the weekend of April 19-21.

Unfortunately, given the historical era we're shooting, all roles are for Caucasian males.

LEADING ROLES:

Captain Donnigan -- 30 to 45 years old, skipper of the boat, an "old man" in sub service terms, intelligent, compassionate, but very much in charge

XO Spencer -- 28 to 40 years old, capable, dedicated to the mission, one of the "new breed" of submariners at the beginning of WWII

Seaman Robbie Patterson -- 20 to 25 years old, radio and hydrophone operator, intelligent, inquisitive, capable.

Lt. Watkins -- 22 to 30 years old, Officer of the Deck (Diving Officer), in command of the crew

Chief Grigg -- 30 to 40, Chief of the Boat (COB)
Seaman Quinn -- 18 to 24, helmsman and Robbie's best friend

Clear as Mudd Films will be holding open auditions for the upcoming feature length film, "A Flush of Hearts." shooting this summer. 

The film, is about a young man who hits the streets of Las Vegas to get money for his sister who has fallen ill with cancer. He meets Ace an amateur poker player and quickly finds himself in the underground poker scene. Jason finds out that Ace is on the run from a loan shark. The to unlikely friends end up in the card game of their lives where the stakes are much more important than money.

A FLUSH OF HEARTS CHARACTER LIST

ACE Male(18-30)-
A young, good looking man in his mid twenties. Ace is an aspiring poker pro who is down on his luck. He loves the game of poker, has played since he was a child, was coached by pros and is constantly doing everything he can to find his next game. He moved to Las Vegas from Boston, to live with his sister who was in nursing school there. His gambling addiction has led him into some trouble, because now he is indebted to a dangerous loan shark. Ace is a smooth talking con artist type. But, he has a big heart and it shows in his interactions with others.

STEPHANIE PATRICK - Female(20-30)
Stephanie is Ace's older sister, also originally from Boston. She moved to Las Vegas to attend nursing school there and ever since her brother moved in with her she has had to 'babysit' him. Both come from a trust-fund family, but unlike her brother, Stephanie still has money in hers. She is a softer spoken kind hearted and compassionate person. She puts up with a lot out of love and always tries to help those around her. 

FRANK VALINCIA- Male (40-60)
Frank is a revered loan shark in Las Vegas, and he does just that loans money to poor suckers who need it. But if they don't pay it back he does more than just report them to the credit agencies. Frank is ruthless and heartless, he cares only about getting his money. Yet, he has a sarcastic wit and odd sense of humor about it. He is shorter and a bit stocky. He uses his enforcers Nick and Markus to help get things done.

MISTY CARLISLE- Female (18-25)
Misty is Aces estranged girlfriend. They have a complicated relationship. Misty is a stripper. And she fell in love with Ace. But, as of recently she only sees him when he is asking her to borrow money. Not knowing the reason for this Misty gets angry and breaks things off with Ace, but later realizes its not that easy when you love someone. Misty is fiery and independent. But she has a soft spot for the man she loves.

PHIL ROTHCHILD- Male (25-40)
Phil is an amateur poker player, who was coached alongside Ace and Sammie until he and Ace got in a fight during a major tournament and were suspended. He holds a rivalry with Ace and relishes any opportunity to break him. Phil is semi famous in the poker world due to a viral internet video depicting him freaking out after losing a game of poker and flipping the table over. Phil is short tempered and very self-centered.

JAYMEE FITZGERALD- Female (8-15)(depending on look)
Jaymee is Jason's little sister. She has been diagnosed with brain cancer, she had the tumor removed but her parents didn't have the money to pay for continued treatment so the cancer is spreading. Jason leaves the home to find money for her treatments, doing everything he does for her. Jaymee is mature for her age but very quiet. She loves her brother more than anything in the world.

LINDA FITZGERALD- Female(35-50)
Linda is Jason and Jaymee's mother. She is a cocaine addict and alcoholic. She lives with her boyfriend Rob who is a trucker but doesn't make enough money to cover Jaymee's bills. She blows off the medical bills to buy drugs which is why Jason ends up leaving the home and taking Jaymee with him.

ROBERT COATES- Male (40-60)
Robert is Linda's boyfriend. He is a redneck trucker and member of a motorcycle club.

NICHOLAS VOCHELLI- Male (25-40)
Nick is one of Frank's enforcers. He speaks but only when spoken too. He is large and muscular and is partial to a wooden baseball bat as a weapon of choice.

MARKUS LOVELLE- Male (25-40)
Franks other large enforcer, who never speaks. He prefers the crowbar to do his enforcing.

EDWARD 'EDDIE' SIMPSON- Male (35-60)

BOBBY KANE- Male(35-50)
Bobby is an underground poker player, who houses a regular game for criminals at his apartment. He has a very short fuse and doesn't like Ace all that much even though he lets him play. He has a violent side that comes out when he's mad. He's on the lam for dealing drugs. He is severely grungy looking.

JOHNNY COE- Male (35-50)
Johnny is one of Bobby's poker buddies, and seemingly the favorite, because he is the only one that can talk Bobby down from his outbursts. He also speaks for Bobby quite a bit.

SLIM- Male (25-40)
Contrary to his name, slim is a very large man. He is one of Bobby's poker buddies.

TONY- Male (25-40)
Tony is a small squirrly guy. He is also one of Bobby's poker buddies.

JULIAN SPITZER- Male (25-35)
A suave poker pro who hosts a monthly high stakes game at his upscale apartment. Spitzer is cocky and kind of sleazy in the way that a director of pornography might be. But he is well liked and a decent person to be around.

ZOE MANCINI- Female(18-30)
Zoe is a regular at Spitzer's tournaments and frequents other amateur Poker tournaments. She is quite a draw for male poker players, as she usually dresses a bit scantily and uses that to her advantage in the game. 

JOEY BIGSBY- Male (18-25)
Joey is a poker player who is coached by spitzer and a regular at spitzer's tournaments. He dresses and talks like a 'wangster'

LEWIS MOORE- Male (35-50)
A regular at Spitzer's tournaments.

DAVID GORDON-Male (40-60)
One of the announcers for the tournament.

MIKE ATTCHISON- Male (35-60)
One of the announcers for the tournament.

LENNY PETROV- Male (30-60)
A Russian poker player in the tournament.

Non speaking characters include, Poker players in scenes 10, 20, and 22, street walkers in scene 1, a tournament director, dealers, the older gentlemen sammie plays blackjack with, patrons at the café, mothers and children at the park, and tournament audience members. EXTRAS can play multiple parts. And smaller speaking roles can also be extras.

Auditions will be on Saturday April 27 from 4:00pm-8:00pm and Sunday April 28 from 12:00pm-5:00pm. The auditions will be a "warm read" you will select the character(s) you wish to audition for and I will send you sides to prepare and audition with. You will select a day and time slot for your audition appointment. And I will also need a headshot.
