CHARACTER DESCRIPTION AND NOTES (plus Storyline if applicable)

CARLITO/CRAIG (Male, 18 years old). Latino or African-American. Carlito is a handsome boy, quiet and introspective. There is thought behind his eyes. Growing up as the “little bro’” to a loud and raucous older brother, Carlito learned early on to remain silent, listen and to be patient. But his silent demeanor should not be underestimated. There is a quiet resilience and strength of character that guides his every decision—which he never makes hastily or without observation and forethought. LEAD

SKINNY GARY(Male, 18 yrs old) Latino or African-American. He comes from a lower middle class family, raised by a single mother. Gary has the kind of face where you immediately feel sorry for him. He looks sad, innocent and for his young years he appears, weary with the world. As such, Gary sighs a lot. Brimming with youthful energy, he’s always twirling a basketball or fiddling with his keys. Gary doesn’t have a lot of patience for people or ignorance. LEAD

JURY FOREMAN(Male, 50’s – 60’s). Preferably Caucasian. He’s a blue-collar manager doing the same low-paying job for decades. There is an off-putting sense of entitlement and false superiority he exudes around everybody he knows. Though he’s been in Nevada for decades, he still retains a trace of southern twang tinged with an old genteel plantation owner charm. He’s an avid weekend gambler who will stay in a game, or an argument, fighting until he is thoroughly broke, or beaten, or both. LEAD

DMV LADY(Female, 40’s – 60’s). Any race. She’s your “other mother”—a woman you want to have as your friend and never as your enemy. Though she’s been at the DMV for years, she has never wanted to be a supervisor. It has always been more important to spend time with her children, and now her grandchildren, than to seek any corporate advancement. She’s a tough woman who loves young people, yet she’s frequently dismayed by their seeming lack of responsibility and laziness. LEAD

ZU aka ZUNIGA (Male, 20’s – 30’s) Latino or African-American. Carlito’s big brother has always been more mouth than action. He’s a know it all, who really knows nothing and has learned to thrive in an environment where ignorance seems to have some value amongst his peers. Zu has been to jail more than a few times, but this has not dissuaded him for always looking for illegal opportunities to make money or to prove his “manhood.” LEAD

JUDGE (Male or Female, 40’s – 50’s) No specific race. This judge is knowledgeable and confident about the law (as a judge should be) but at this stage he (or she) is weary with seeing young people in the criminal justice system.

“MARY KAY” (Female 40’s) Caucasian preferred. She’s an affable woman, though a bit naïve. Easily guided and influenced by others, Mary would rather have other people make up her mind for her than pursue truths herself.

CAMPAIGN WORKER(Female, 20’s) White. Eager. Innocent. Naïve. Fresh off the farm… or suburbs.

COP #1 (male or female, 30’s): Not a bad cop at all. Just a guy who does his job by the book.

COP #2 (male or female, 30’s): A cop who looks out for his partner but who is a bit skittish of the potential dangers of the streets.

HOMIE #1 (male, 20’s): Wants to be a comedian but is too lazy (or scared) to entertain anybody other than his family or friends.

HOMIE #2 (male, 20’s): This guy could be anything in the world but he has smoked himself out. Now, how to get weed or drink is his only concern.

SMACK TALKER#1, Smack Talker #2, Smack-Talkers (male & female, 20’s): A mix of street kids who talk a lot of sh--. Everybody always tries to outtalk the other.

RED SHIRT(male, 20’s): a Smack-Talker who can dribble a basketball.

HARD-LINERS(male and females, 20’s) Quiet and simmering with anger, they look like they all have done some time in juvenile jail… or prison, or both.

MUSCULAR SKIN, (male, 20’s) He’s a hard-liner with jailhouse-forged muscles.

ASSISTANT DA(male or female, 30’s): Eager, animated, fine suit wearing worker.

PUBLIC DEFENDER(male or female, 30’s): Cheap suit wearing government worker.

JURORS (all 30’s and above). Mostly Caucasian. All look mature… not necessarily upper or middle class, but definitely not of the hip-hop era.

SKINNY GARY'S MOM (female, late 40’s): Latina or African-American. A woman without much money, but lots of love and tears for her son.

SKINNY GARY'S SISTER(female, teenager): Latina or African-American. A teen worried about her brother
