Auditions have been set for Sept. 9-10 for a fall performance by Henderson Community Theatre of the classic comedy “Harvey.”

They will be held at 6:30 p.m. both nights at the Henderson Fine Arts Center.

Although auditioners are welcome to attend auditions both nights, only once is necessary.

A.J. Casey will direct “Harvey,” a classic comedy by Mary Chase and one of the most popular stage and film comedies of the 20th century.

Director Casey will cast six men and six women in roles varying in ages from early 20s through 60s. Those auditioning are welcome to prepare a short comedic monologue, but the audition will focus on cold readings from the play.

In “Harvey,” Elwood P. Dowd, a character made famous by Jimmy Stewart, has an imaginary friend, a 6 1/2-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey. Embarrassed by her brother’s eccentric behavior, Veta Simmons decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter, Myrtle Mae, and their family from further embarrassment. In the tradition of screwball comedies, as the play unravels everyone comes to a new understanding of sanity — and a new appreciation of insanity.

The cast will rehearse on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m.

“Harvey” will be performed on Nov. 22-23 at Henderson Fine Arts Center.
